The Modern Marvels Invent Now Challenge is a contest that invites the everyday inventor to share his/her vision and ingenious design with the world. Twenty-five semi-finalists will have the opportunity to be recognized, have their invention exhibited and receive valuable information to help them in the pursuit of their invention concept. The most remarkable invention submitted will be named the 2006 "Modern Marvel of the Year". The Challenge celebrates mankind's ingenuity and provides a forum for the independent inventor to be recognized.

Its Inventors

The Challenge is named in part for The History Channel signature series, Modern Marvels, and Invent Now and the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation, dedicated to honoring and fostering creativity and invention in people of all ages.
The Modern Marvels series celebrates ingenuity, invention and imagination. The programs tell the fascinating stories of the doers, dreamers and sometime-schemers that created everyday items, technological breakthroughs and man-made wonders. Be inspired. Watch Modern Marvels weeknights on The History Channel.

How to Submit

History.com/invent

Log on to History.com/invent between now and December 31st to enter the competition. A patent is not required for submittal; however for your protection we require that a patent has been applied for or a provisional patent granted if you do not have a patent. The Submission Form and the website detail all the instructions and information you need to properly submit your invention idea. Please note that the Modern Marvels Invent Now Challenge has no ambition to license or exploit your idea. Our objective is to provide a spotlight on you and your invention idea. Your rights and intellectual property remain your own to negotiate with whomever you desire.

$25,000 Grand Prize Grant and More

In February 2006, The History Channel and National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation will name 100 honorable mentions and 25 semi-finalists. The Semi-Finalists will exhibit their invention ideas at a national exposition and will participate in a full day seminar with renowned invention experts. Four Finalists selected from the 25 semi-finalists will additionally win a one-on-one consultation with one of the seminar leaders, a $2,500 grant and will be featured on The History Channel during a special Modern Marvels "Invention Week" in May 2006. The Grand Prize winner will receive all the Challenge benefits, plus the recognition as the "Modern Marvel of the Year" and a $25,000 grant.

Deadline: December 31, 2005

Small Business Resolutions for the New Year

The start of the New Year brings with it great possibilities. If you are a small business owner, you probably have big ideas for the year ahead, such as new product launches and visibility for your goods. Whatever the scenario, be sure to make IP protection part of your plan.

Your intellectual property, your own innovative idea is comparable to your identity. Once it’s stolen, it’s hard to get it back. Protecting your intellectual property rights early will help safeguard your product or service from illegal replication down the road.

The counterfeiting and piracy of consumer goods and products is steadily on the rise, both in the United States and abroad, and poses threat to the U.S. economy. Small-businesses are particularly vulnerable because they often lack resources and expertise.

Recognizing that this is an increasing concern, last year the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) launched a small business education program. This program is designed to educate small business owners about the increasing problem of intellectual property theft and to inform them about the steps they can take to protect their intellectual property. As part of the program, the USPTO has also launched a Web site http://w ww.uspto.gov/smallbusiness dedicated to providing information particularly relevant to small businesses.

For more information on benefits of strong IP protection, both in the United States and overseas, and for details on filing for IP protection, please visit http://w ww.uspto.gov/smallbusiness.
